About Author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925), was the sixth son of a Norfolk Squire. He spent six years in' South Africa as a young man and wrote books on South African history and adventure novels that made him famous. His books were notable chiefly for weird invention and spell-binding narrative and were diversely set. His fascination with the Zulu culture can be seen in his portraits of Umbopa in King Solomon's Mines.

Sir Haggard's novels draw upon a considerable knowledge of history, tradition and mythographic theory. He served on many Royal Commissions, and if was for his public service that he was knighted in 1911. Haggard's novels remain continuously popular, and several of them have been filmed. Rudyard Kipling, Andrews Lang, Thomas Hardy and Jung were a few of his celebrated close friends and admirers of his writings. His other well known works include She, Return of She, Marie, Child of Storm and Finished.
